#1 Winged ant, Oktober, Ungarn [Myrmoxenus ravouxi]
This winged ant was flying in mid October. A middle sized specimen, cc 4-5mm. On chalk crop. Very disctinctive species. Is this a male or a female?
#2 AW: Winged ant, Oktober, Ungarn
Myrmoxenus ravouxi young queen. It is this genus, and most probably also the species.
It's a slavemaking ant with a couple of host species, usually Temnothorax unifasciatus, but also T. nigriceps, rarely T. affinis.
For observing colony foundation you would need a middle-size colony of T. unifasciatus. The Myrmoxenus queen then would try to penetrate this colony, and slowly throttle the host queen to death. May need a couple of weeks until she is dead.
A remarkable record, anyhow!

Merkur
