But when did the anomaly probably start:was it on the ant since it was born , or did it appear as egg ,larvae or pupae?

[font=Times New Roman]Such anomalies probably are induced already in the embryonic stage, within the egg. One quite reasonable explanation is that a worker in the nest may have a somewhat defective mandibular tooth, so that it can damage the developing embryo when the egg is handled and carried.[/font]
[font=Times New Roman]Here are two – bad – copies of similar duplications. One is a larva of Temnothorax fuentei with two front ends, from López & Ortuno 1992, the other a two-headed worker of Temnothorax parvulus, from Balazuc (1958).[/font]
